• Buy SIM card and minutes to call home
• Figure out etiquette for meeting the chief of the village
• Don’t pay obruni (white man) tax on taxis
• Don’t look at beggars
• No smiling at venders
• Never use your left hand to point, shake hands, give, or receive anything. Ever.
• Carry toilet paper at all times
• Just because someone is speaking English doesn’t mean they understand you
• Pineapple is good and good for you
• I can survive 45 hours in planes and airports

ReplyDeleteHa, ha! Love the left hand thing. I spent two years in South Africa/Botswana, and it wasn't very specific about the left hand, but you never shake hands or receive anything with one hand. If you can't take it with two hands, then you have to place the non-receiving hand on the wrist of the receiving hand.
ReplyDeleteIt took me a while to get out of the habit of putting my left hand on my right wrist as I shook hands with people when I got back.
Of course, since I went to South Africa, it also took a while to get used to driving on the right side of the road again.
I miss Africa!
